From the moment I got my sisterlocks installed, I thought that I would one day like to not have to rely on a consultant to maintain my lifestyle/hairstyle for me. Price was never an issue, but the health of my locks was all I'm concerned with. I just watched Kalia Dewdrop you tube video on how to retighten your own SL's with a 4 point pattern http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSYM3j-QLvs&feature=channel. I'm now in the process of ordering my nappyloc tool. After my retightening, I have had no locks slip out and I have some locks that have sealed ends so I know that my locks are going to lock much sooner than a year. Upon receiving my nappylock tool I plan to attempt to retighten a few of my locks, the ones that I know get more than one rotation. If all goes well, by the end of year I plan to do my own retightenings.
My blog family (newbies), what are your plans in regards to maintenance? Do you plan to always go to your consultant? Or do you plan on starting to DIY?
Please let me know your thoughts...

You are so brave!!! I admire you. I want to become a DIYer, but I need to have someone else look at my locks to see if I have any issues going on, but I certainly would like to try. After reviewing Queen Nat's blog, I started to seriously think about it. I had planned to go go a consultant for about year first and then begin doing myself, now I'm not so sure. Keep us informed. I am going to view dewdrop's youtube demo. It may change my mind just it has yours!!!
I will def. DIY but not until my locks have settled. I have been thinking about taking the retightening class but I dont know. With all the information out here it may not be needd but I just want to have the sisterlock tools. Hopefully my locks will be in a good enough condition for me to try my first DIY retightening at 7 months, we will see. Good luck to ya.
Felicia -Kay - around our year mark the majority if not all of our locks should be settled. Neither of you said that you have 4a or 4b hair so our hair is tightly coiled and will lock easily. I have thought about the retightening class as well but I'm just not sure it would be worthwhile by my 6 month mark because of the wealth of information out there.
Kay - from all the DIY'er out there they seem to like the nappylock tool. Who knows that might be due to the fact that w/out taking the class you cannot get the SL tool and all you have to use is the nappylock tool. And yes at 7 months, I may do the whole retightening myself. The new consultant I have i know will be open to helping me if I run into any issues so I'm looking forward to learning how to do this. Its going to be self satisfaction and TRUE FREEDOM!!!!
My pattern is reverse 4 and 3 pt - which confuses me more than the straightforward 4 pt rotation. I'm not sure I will take a class but I'd like to ask my consultant to teach me - she seems pretty open to the idea. Good luck when you start!
Bajan Lily - I haven't seen anything on you tube about the reverse pattern 4 or 3, but from the sound it seems like you just reverse the 4 :-). I'm sure there is more to it than that. I'm interested in the class too but I'm going to attempt to use the Nappylock tool and see how it goes.
If your consultant is going to teach you thats excellent, most consultants aren't even open to the idea.
I've been DIY-ing for 6 mths. I went to my consultant for 1yr, then, she had to travel.She was going to be away for some mths so She told me my pattern and encouraged me to retighten them myself, which was exactly what I wanted to do. Once I completed my full head (using a yarn needle), I knew I'd carry on DIY without the class. She's willing to help me out if I ran into problems, but so far so good.
Anthia - have you had any issues with your own retightenings? And do you still use the yarn needle?
i had sisterlocks before & spent thousands of dollars. this go round, i installed my own braidlocs & have been maintaining 'em w/a nappyloc tool. and let me tell ya, i absolutely luv it. GO DIYers...

@Bajan Lily - so I tightened another lock that I found wasn't done(UGH) anyway although the NL hole is big when you are pulling your hair through the root you just want to make sure you are feeding it through without bringing the NL tool to the end of your lock. As you pull through you just want to make sure not to pull the NL tool to the end. I don't know if that explanation make sense, but let me know. I might have to try posting a video on it.
